If these walls could talk, would they tell us where the treasure on Oak Island is buried? The remaining walls of the McGinnis foundation are bathed in the late summer sunlight on Oak Island.
Daniel McGinnis was one of the three young men that, as legend has it, found is one of the names associated with the finding of the Money Pit and the beginning of the hunt for buried treasure on Oak Island.
The McGinnis Foundation, as it is known is a heritage site in Nova Scotia and is off limits to anyone without permission from the Province of Nova Scotia. As the area around the foundation is also heritage land, all structures on or near the area must be temporary. No permanent structures permitted. The nearby War Room of Curse of Oak Island fame is nearby, and is a temporary structure, able to be moved. Nova Scotia honors the heritage and history of this magical island.
One of 365 islands in Mahone Bay, Oak Island is home to the longest running treasure hunt in the world.
As the story goes, in the late 1700s, 3 young men Including Daniel McGinnis discovered a depression in the ground under an oak tree on the island. Believing that pirates including Captain Kidd had buried treasure, they dug a hole, discovering a series of platforms, at different intervals and depths. According to the legend, some believe they discovered buried treasure but left due to superstition and fear. That area, over the centuries has become known as the Money Pit.
The story was published in local newspapers and the fame of the island spread. The treasure hunt was on! Over the next centuries, many attempts were made to recover what was thought to be fabulous treasures, Aztec Gold, Shakespeare's manuscripts, the Ark of the Covenant, and the Holy Grail.
During the digs, lives were lost and the 'curse' of Oak Island was born. According to the legend...7 must die before the treasure is found. To this date...6 men have lost their lives in the search.
Oak Island is privately owned and you can only access the island with their permission. There is a museum and interpretive center open to the public during the summer months, where artifacts recovered are on display.
In 2014 The History Channel and Prometheus Entertainment launched a reality Television show The Curse of Oak Island, following the search for the treasure by the island's owners, brothers Rick and Marty Lagina, and their partners, Dan and Dave Blankenship, and Craig Tester. That television series is now shown around the world in 66 countries.
Proceeds from sales of my Oak Island images will be donated to the IWK Health Center in Nova Scotia, the charity of choice for Oak Island Tours
